Last week when Apple announced the new iPad pro and iOS 11, it really got my attention. While having used iPads for many years, I never thought it was possible for them to eventually replace a laptop (although a lot of people talked that way). I saw too many barriers, power, storage space, lack of good keyboard and keyboard shortcuts for apps), lack of powerful apps etc. When I saw the announcement, I realized Apple have solved some of these issues, such as larger capacity 256gb and 512Gb storage and upcoming sharable and organizational folders, true multitasking and laptop class performance. I ordered immediately and mine arrived on day one. Here is my walkthrough, tests, unboxing and yes, a little humor to keep it fun.
I also purchased (none of this is sponsored by Apple) the apple pencil and the smart keyboard. The keyboard changes the game A LOT! I always hated typing on the screen. The keyboard on the smart cover/keyboard feels really good, like better than the Microsoft surface pro, good.
With powerful apps such as Adobe Lightroom Mobile, affinity and procreate I actually feel like it’s elevated beyond “toy” status where I could see myself doing actual work on it, for the first time ever. I actually see a path to where the iPad could be used as a serious content creation tool. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ready to dump my macbook Pro (2012 model – see why I hate the 2016 Macbook Pro / 2017 review to come soon) anytime in the near future. However, I can see a path ahead where a tablet device will make the laptop obsolete one day.
Maybe I’ve been living under a rock and this has been a thing, but procreate (a drawing app) supports keyboard shortcuts. You may think that’s backwards, after all we have gestures now right? There are so many things I love KB shortcuts for and I believe a serious app needs then to speed up productivity. We aren’t looking for gimmicks, we are looking for serious content creation tools. For the best onscreen drawing experience, check out the Wacom Cintiq and Intuos tablets. My review for the new Intuos Pro here.
Anyway, check out my review video above and let me know what you think in the comments.
